On February 8th, US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo announced the formation of the US AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC). This consortium brings together AI system creators and users, academics, government and industry researchers, and civil society organizations.
The full list of participants is over 200 groups long, all focused on the development and deployment of safe and trustworthy AI.
In her announcement, Secretary Raimondo said that the US AISIC was set up to accomplish two key goals set forth by President Biden: to “set safety standards and protect our innovation ecosystem.”
To do this, the consortium brings together companies working on the frontlines of creating and using AI software, but also brings in civil society and academic teams who are building a foundational understanding of how AI can (and will) transform our society, as well as representatives from professions with deep engagement in current AI use.
The consortium also includes state and local governments as well as non-profit organizations. Its formation represents the largest collection of test and evaluation teams established to date, and will help focus on establishing the groundwork for new measurement science in AI safety.
The newly formed AISIC will be housed under the US AI Safety Institute (USAISI), and will help contribute to priorities laid out in President Biden’s Executive Order on AI. In that EO, the Biden administration set out eight goals to protect Americans from the risks posed by AI systems, including setting new standards for AI safety and security, advancing equity and civil rights, and promoting innovation and competition.
The AISIC will help contribute to these goals by supporting:
So far, the Biden administration's announcements and efforts around AI have focused on the balance of ensuring safety while still protecting American innovation, and this consortium is a continuation of that balancing act. The work of consortium participants will help form the guidance that other organizations can use to ensure safe and innovative use of AI in their own operations as well.
